Do you think that you are addicted to information/internet/Social Media? Do you think that you may have a tiny problem with that? that (just) maybe you are loosing the control?
Some time ago I asked a question whether we are ready to slow down with social media/internet, etc. And since that time I have noticed that people who I am working with, some of my friends and I – we are not slowing down but we even try to speed up.
I have to admit that I feel good (so far) about that, I think that it’s not a problem to stay connected on-line as long as possible. I just watched 2 movies which made me think – that my life is totally different than 15 years ago – when I was more off-line than on-line.

Have you ever been in a situation describer by Tiffany: sneaking to the bathroom during a dinner at the restaurant just to check an email? For Tiffany it was a wake-up call to do something about that, to think what’s going on with us…and that was the beginning of the idea for the movie. But just think about it – what does it mean for you? Probably you already noticed that but didn’t do anything about that. I remember how many times I was (and still am) attached to my laptop or smartphone…checking emails/surfing via social media, checking/testing new apps, read latest news, etc. – just to stay connected 24/7
Are you in situation when instead of looking by the window to check the weather you are checking it on-line? Maybe it’s not a big deal right now, because we have all those friends all over the internet, we are ok! right?
So what’s next with us – people who are addicted to the information/on-line world? What will our future look like? Right now I don’t mind but within next 5-10-15 years?
Are we ready to slow down?
Are we ready to leave iPhone at home and go for a walk with friends?
ohh and one more thing before some of you will try to say that it’s good to slow down with technology/information/internet – thanks to all those 3 we are able to move faster with the development (in medicine, technology, etc.) – so more lives can be saved. etc.

I just read a very interesting post by Jonathan Richman “How New Facebook Features Will Impact Healthcare” in which Jonathan is suggesting that sharing some/all (?) information about our health might help and change our social media lives, the way how pharma companies will interact with us.
(…) I argue constantly that if people gave up a little privacy it would likely make them and the rest of us a lot healthier. (…)
I understand that it means changing one of the most important part of our privacy perception – giving up and publishing our health’s status. I get it, I know that there can be something good about this – like saving life, getting rid off the rush quicker and maybe cheaper – because some pharma company/doctor/on-line friend/etc. can suggest some medicine we may use or information about someone (who?) may help us, providing us with important health updates, etc. I would like to focus on another aspect of that issue – giving up the last frontier of our privacy, giving up/sharing our health information.
ok,ok….when you look at this issue, we are already sharing some of that: Facebook checking-in to medical places (dentist, hospital, pharmacy, etc.) or updating our Facebook or Twitter status by posting comments such as: “I’m sick today, that’s my 5th cold this year”. And I think that this is just the beginning. So what’s next? What we will do next?:
- how many health related information are we willing to share via social media?
- who wants to get to those information?
- what 3rd parties would like to do with that kind of knowledge about our health?
I think that if there is more information about our health, there will be someone (individual or organization) willing to interact and do something (bad or good) with that information – wow, that doesn’t sound good.
Just think about big pharmaceutical industry, it’s big, has a great budget for marketing research, wants to get to as much as possible information about our health. And what about insurance industry? same thing.

At Allfacebook site you can find new article “Hate Facebook’s Changes? Try These Two Apps!” with information about apps which help you to get rid of unwanted Facebook features.
So in case if you don’t really remember (or you are still in shock) all the features Facebook presented over short period of time – I’ve been trying to check what’s new on Facebook:
- top stories –> highlights posts and prioritizes them at the top of your feed stream.
- new stories –> no more “recent posts/top posts” now it’s time for “new stories”
- buzz stream (ticker) –> on upper right on sidebar (above the list of friends who are on-line) you can find real-time stream of posts published by your friends, so no more scrolling down to check who wrote what and when. Hovering over those activities you can expand and check the content and post a comment
- subscribes –> yes yes yes it’s more like “follow” at Twitter so if there is someone you would like to “follow” on Facebook but you don’t want to or can’t send a “friend’s request” you can subscribe to their comment stream. I think that’s one of the better ideas.

What is going on with Facebook? Why they are updating/changing so much in such a short time? Is that necessary? Is that another level of Facebook vs. Google+ battle? I’m afraid that too many changes might not help Facebook.

Do you (still) remember TV commercials?
Did you like to watch TV commercials or maybe every time there was a commercial break on TV – you just made a trip to the kitchen, etc.?
Over the last few days I’ve watched over 100 TV/newspaper/on-line commercials which I found on Ads of the world. There are many different kinds of ads (and that’s nothing unusual) but I’ve noticed that there are some major patterns (not always):
- women in TV –> type: most of the time beautiful, not too intelligent + ads: health, cosmetics, household (cleaning supplies), clothes, etc.
- men in commercials–> type: handsome, sweet and intelligent or funny and not so bright + ads: business, banks, consultant agencies, household (home improvement), etc.
Musikaliska Concert Hall: Farinelli (not sure where to add this commercial):
- children, animals in commercials –> naughty, sweet
- non-profit organizations/public agencies –> to promote some good cause (e.g. public safety, health, etc.)
KLM: Little acts of kindness (how far is social?):
I think that over the years TV/newspaper commercials are changing but still we can watch a lot of men+beer, women+cleaning supplies commercials. After watching over 150 commercials I think that still somehow (in my opinion) women on TV ads are presented as “you don’t have to think too much as long as you look great” or “wow, that’s so nice that all you know is what’s in the kitchen”. TV commercials are not easy on men as well: “you don’t have to be handsome nor smart as long as you know how to fix it.” etc.
But also there are more and more interactive commercials, more creative, more interesting. When you watch on-line commercial you are able to interact by clicking on it and usually there are more options you can chose from. It’s really great because viewers become part of it and not only external recipient.
Nevertheless there are some really great TV commercials over the world worth to watch.
So I decided to share some of those books with you. Most of those (if not all) are social media, marketing, leadership , personal development related books. I hope next time create “just to read and have fun” list of books.

Do you like to share photos and update your Facebook status while on vacation? Do you get impatient when you have to find free Wi-Fi or nearest available computer with internet access? of course you can pay your mobile provider for internet access (good luck with if you are abroad) or you can go and look for free Wi-Fi at the hotel you are staying at. But it takes time and some efforts and what is most important – it takes time (and usually it won’t be “live”).
…so how to share your off-line holiday experience on-line “live”?

What’s the RFID technology?
smart labels, also called radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. RFID tags are intelligent bar codes that can talk to a networked system to track every product that you put in your shopping cart.
Hotel’s guests are wearing RFID wristbands and every time they want to share pictures or update their Facebook status all they have to do is to swipe the wristband at various RFID-points that the hotel has set up around the resort. Using their wristband they can login to their Facebook account and take a picture/update status/post comments.

QR codes are getting more and more popular all over the world. Companies are using qr codes more often, but how about RFID tags/labels? As long as that RFID-technology is well known in retail industry (e.g. books at the bookstore) I am not sure how often companies are using this as a part of their marketing strategy.

As long as on-line and off-line worlds collide we might see more of those gadgets on the market. I am wondering what’s next, what new hi-tech gadgets we will see on the market. I can’t wait.

ohh come on, make up your mind, will you? but I can’t: I like Facebook (I mean I got used to it) and Google+ is so new and I just don’t want to move all my friends lists from Facebook to Google+. But at the other hand, Google+ is growing so fast, and so many people are using it (over 10 million since it’s launch).
ok ok, I need to stop for a sec and think:
- time –> how much time do I spend on all those activities on Google+ and Facebook
- Where are all my friends? –> I want to be where my friends are
- why –> why do I want to use Google+? maybe because I don’t want to be left behind. I want to know what is going on across the social media environment
So what should I do? What is the best option?
I think I will give Google+ a try and see what happen next. At the same time I will remember not to forget about my everyday schedule. And, of course, I won’t leave Facebook (over 700 millions users there).

Here are some interesting points (in my opinion the best part of the book):
- “we tried it, it doesn’t work” –> this is exactly the biggest problem, we are impatient, and at the same time social media is a long-term plan. How many small companies doesn’t have even a short-term social media strategy? How many companies first do some research and then create a plan of action? Why they can create a financial strategy, etc. but when comes down to social media it’s hard to believe there should be one?
social media is a long-term play, which is why the majority of the companies that have tried it have failed yo reach their potential. (…) You can’t reap the benefits of social media’s word’s of mouth without strategy and commitment.
- “We’re doing fine without it” –> why do you think you are fine without social media? because your revenue is high? How high will be your revenue if you tried social media? Did you test it? No? so how do you know?
How do you know you are “fine”? if you are not in the trenches, listening to your customers and asking them what they think?
- “It takes too long to pay off” –> of course it take long time to pay off! Do you expect to get more clients/more money withing first week or two? It’s not doing to happen, so you better think how to create a long-term communication with your customers, potential customers
Social media is a marathon. (…) Diversification is important.
- “Social media works only for startup, lifestyle or tech brands” –> no no no! Every business can use social media, it’s all about the content, good idea how to get to your potential customers. The moment we find the right link/common topic to engage people – they will get involved (oh and don’t forget that’s the long-term strategy).
The concrete company’s mission isn’t to get as many people as possible to buy concrete, it’s to get as many people who need concrete to buy concrete. And the biggest challenge, the one that offers the most potential for growth, is to reach people who don’t yet know they need concrete.

Did you ever think how much power you have and how you can use it:
- say something nice –> it’s not the end of the world to say something nice to your friends/co-workers. Don’t lie, just think if there is something nice you can say…and most of the time there is.
- positive feedback –> it won’t hurt you if you give a positive feedback (of course if there is any, and usually there is). Don’t you think that we don’t need positive feedback?
- encouragement –> big word (I know) but we need that. It’s great to give and receive that boost sometimes. That few words “you can do it” can help a lot.
I think that we are taking all the good things for granted sometimes. So maybe this time lets stop for a moment and think – what can I do/say (something GOOD) today?
